Taurus TX 22 Review – The Best 22LR Pistol on the Market?
What is the best 22LR pistol available today (in 2023)?
We believe that it is the Taurus TX 22. In this Taurus TX22 review, we’ll take a close look at this popular .22LR pistol and see how it performs in terms of accuracy, reliability, ergonomics, and value.
Whether you’re a beginner shooter, a plinker, or a competitive shooter, the Taurus TX22 has something to offer.
Introduction to the TX 22
The Taurus TX22 is a semi-automatic pistol that features a polymer frame, a 4.1-inch barrel, and a 16-round magazine. It’s designed to be lightweight, comfortable, and easy to shoot, with a low bore axis, a crisp trigger, and adjustable sights. The TX22 also has a manual safety and a striker-fired action that ensures consistent performance.
Where to Buy it?
Taurus TX22
This is by far our favorite 22 LR pistol. The TX22 is an incredible value for the price
- Affordable
- Extremely Reliable
- Accurate
- Flat shooting
Price 4.5/5
The TX 22 is priced extrempely competitive with an MSRP of $289. It isn’t the cheapest 22LR pistol on the market, but it is definitely the highest quality at this price point.
Accuracy 4/5
One of the biggest advantages of the Taurus TX22 is its accuracy. Thanks to its excellent trigger and sight system, the TX22 is capable of shooting tight groups at various distances. I’m able to run dicken drills with it out to 50 yards no problem, all day long.
That said, accuracy can be even further improved by purchasing the longer, heavier barreled competition slide upgrade, which features an integrated fix mounting system for a variety of optics. This upgrade will bring accuracy easily to 5/5 and it is the reason why the TX22 is my go to competition gun for steel challenge.
Reliability 4.5/5
It’s also very reliable, with minimal malfunctions or stoppages even with a wide variety of ammo types. I purchased 6 extra magazines on sale from Taurus, in addition to the 3 magazine that came with the pistol. Out of all 9, I have one magazine that constantly malfunctions, the other 8 are flawless.
There are a number of fixes that can be done to fix the faulty magazine, and I’ll likely play around with the bad one and then post a follow up blog post on how to deal with it.
The pistol itself has had near flawless reliability for me though, so I don’t blame that on the pistol so much as I do the possibility of faulty magazines.
Ergonomics 5 / 5
It’s rare that I rate a pistol as having 5 out of 5 on ergonomics, but I love the feel of this pistol. It’s grip is comfortable and easy to hold. The design of the frame lends itself well to a more active style grip, as its cut out with gas pedals to help control the already low recoil of the 22LR. Shooting this pistol is like shooting a BB gun. Due to the ergonomics, the TX22 (with competition slide replacement) has become my go to 22LR competition gun, including for steel challenge and general 22LR target shooting.
Ease of Use 5 / 5
The slide on this pistol is easy to manipulate, which is great for newer shooters. My wife has no trouble manipulating the controls. The controls are stupid simple. They are very similar to glock. Some models have a manual safety, but this is optional as you can buy it without this feature. The magazine release is in a great spot and easy to manipulate. Mags drop freely. The size of the pistol is quite similar to a Glock 19.
Those who are familiar with Glock will be right at home with this little pistol.
Out of Box Trigger 4 / 5
The out of box trigger, at least on my model, was a little rough until it was thoroughly broken in. A good cleaning with a lot of oil helped, but I had to get nearly a 500 rounds through it and plenty of dryfire before I was able to really enjoy the trigger.
The break and reset on the trigger are great, especially for a small 22LR pistol. Overall, very few complaints here.
After Market / Holster Availability 4 / 5
The aftermarket is a bit limited on this pistol. There’s barely an aftermarket for most 22LR pistols, so still with the TX 22 it is better than most. I’ve found that there are only a few holster manufacturers out there making holsters for the TX 22, and even fewer making it for the competition slide model.
That said, Taurus themselves offer a number of accessories through shoptaurus.com, including this competition slide that I picked up on sale for $199. I do enjoy the upgradeability of this pistol overall and Taurus’s ongoing support for their product.
Conclusion
With a price point that’s much lower than many other .22LR pistols on the market, the TX22 offers a lot of features and performance for the money. Overall, if you’re in the market for a .22LR pistol that’s accurate, reliable, comfortable, and affordable, the Taurus TX22 is definitely worth considering.
It’s a well-designed pistol that can serve a variety of purposes, and it’s sure to provide you with many hours of shooting pleasure. So, why not give it a try?
